In connection with the Slovak army’s purchase of 14 F-16C Block 70 fighter jets, Letecké opravovne Trenčín (LOTN) became the strategic partner of the American company Lockheed Martin, says Mike Kelley.
The manufacturer will cooperate with Slovak companies in five short-term and two long-term projects. According to Kelley, who was leading the lobbying process in Slovakia, the Trenčín-based LOTN focusing on service and repair has adequate capacities to service the new planes. In case of securing additional orders for the fighter jet from neighboring regions the importance of the LOTN will rise further.
It is possible, that in the near future Croatia and Bulgaria could strengthen their air forces with F-16 type jets. The Slovak government decided to purchase 14 planes for US$1,86 billion. The first planes will be manufactured in September 2020, the transaction will be officially closed until the end of this year.
Slovakia is only the second country after Bahrain to purchase F-16C’s. According to reports the newly acquired jet fighters could solve the aerial border protection for up to 60 years. Due to the nature of the agreement the Slovak companies are also responsible for the technical support and the training of the personnel.
