In Kraków and Gdańsk the siting mayors, backed by the liberal Civic Coalition won around 65 percent of the vote. In Kielce the sitting mayor, supported by PiS, lost to a liberal MEP who polled 64 percent.

According to Tomasz Sakiewicz, chief editor of the conservative newspaper “Gazeta Polska Codziennie” PiS “must keep on trying to reach the inhabitants of major cities, it must mobilize”.

Sakiewicz felt that PiS could not be fully satisfied with the local government election results.

We can see that PiS has the support of 35-40 percent. It can say it won these elections nationwide, but the results in the cities show that something is missing

“We can see that PiS has the support of 35-40 percent. It can say it won these elections nationwide, but the results in the cities show that something is missing,” said Sakiewicz during the evening election exit polls coverage on Telewizja Republika.

PiS won in regional councils two weeks ago

In the first round of voting two weeks ago PiS won in the elections of the 16 regional councils polling 34 percent of the vote. However, it lost to the liberal opposition in the major cities.

In the second round of voting 649 municipalities elected their mayors in run-offs between the top two candidates from the first round.
