Damage must be avoided over Brexit

Czech MEPs agree that Tuesday's rejection of the Brexit deal by the British Parliament means continuing the uncertainty and increasing the likelihood of the UK leaving the European Union without an agreement. "Brexit without agreement would be the worst possible way – way of chaos and uncertainty for citizens and business," said Dita Charanzová, leader of the ANO movement in the European elections.

Her colleague Martina Dlabajová is also concerned about the consequences of Britain leaving the EU without an agreement. "Brexit is really behind the door, and after the vote we are again at the very beginning. Now we are in a situation where none of us know how the process will continue and whether the UK has any plans at all," Dlabajová said.

Non-partisan Pavel Telička considers the vote of the British deputies as a further step towards a hard Brexit, Communist MEP Kateřina Konečná then considers the rejected agreement as the only possible, though not ideal one.

Tomáš Zdechovský (KDU-ČSL) remarked that May was given a lesson for weak politicians. He perceives the result of the voting as a confirmation of Brexit chaos. This is similarly seen by his colleague Jiří Pospíšil (TOP 09). "The key will now be to prevent Britain from leaving the EU without an agreement because it would damage not only Britain but also the interests of the Czech Republic," Pospíšil said.

Olga Sehnalová (CSSD) would then like British citizens to decide on the future of the country themselves. "I personally would like the political representation to find the courage to let citizens vote not only on the intention to leave the EU but also on the conditions in which this can happen," Sehnalová said. Jaromír Štětina, who founded new movement Europe together, agrees with her. As a solution, he would rather prefer a new referendum on Britain´s future in the EU.
