Former Health Minister to lead SPD European ballot

Former Minister of Health, Ivan David has been approved as the Okamura’s SPD party leader for the upcoming European elections.

Ivan David held the Minister of Health position in Zeman’s government from 1998 to 2002. Party leader Tomio Okamura will run from last place, and in the case of Okamura being elected, his mandate in the Lower Chamber would automatically expire.

Last October, David ran for the Senate in the Prague 12 district. He gained 5.5 percent and ended up fifth. Between 1998 and 2002 he served as an MP of the Social Democrats, from 1990 he was a member of an association called Left alternative. David left the party in 2015. Between 2005 and 2008 David was in charge of the Psychiatric Hospital Bohnice, where he continued as a Deputy.

SPD called its party leader nomination in last position as a sign of how important the elections are, adding that it also shows strong support to the other candidates. Okamura, however, has a chance to get elected. He could collect enough preferential votes and overtake the others. The party has announced their European election ballot as the last Parliamentary party.
