Hungarian fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones TV show can finally rejoice: as of May 1st, it is legal to name their baby girl after Daenerys Targaryen, the ash-blonde Mother of Dragons intent on conquering the Iron Throne.
Hungary has a relatively strict naming law, with a list of approved names published annually by the Linguistics Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences – the ultimate authority on names and spelling in general.
The recently published list now includes Daenerys – or rather its Hungarian phonetic transcription, Denerisz.
Names of other female protagonists – Cersei and Sansa spring to mind – have not yet made it to the list, but there still is a way for determined parents: the Linguistics Institute does allow individual requests that are judged by a set of rules and approved or rejected.
