In addition to the purchase of 44 latest-generation Leopard 7A+ main battle tanks, the Hungarian Armed Forces has announced the purchase of 22 armored, self-propelled artillery pieces.
The Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000) is manufactured by Munich-based German defense company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann - which also makes locomotives, tanks and various other armored vehicles.
PzH 2000 is one of the most powerful self-propelled artillery pieces in the world. Its 155mm Rheinmetall gun can lob artillery shells as far as 60 kilometers (37.3 miles). It weighs 55.8 tons, has a 985 horsepower engine and a maximum road speed of 67 km/h.
In addition to the German Bundeswehr, the PzH is currently also operated by Croatia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Qatar. While - as usual - the Hungarian Defense Ministry has not announced the value of the deal, the average price of PzH 2000 on the international market is US$4.5 million.
