Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! topped the box office charts in Hungary last year with 573,000 tickets sold, closely followed by Avengers: Infinity Wars with 572,000 and Bohemian Rhapsody with 533,000. This is a significant departure from global trends, where Avengers was no.1, followed by Black Panther and the latest installment of the Jurassic Park franchise.
Total ticket sales rose by half a million to 15.6 million in 2018 (Hungary has a population of 9.78 million) with revenues rising HUF one billion to 21.9 billion (US$78 million). The most popular domestic movie was the comedy Valami Amerika 3. with 371,000 tickets sold.
Meanwhile, movie production in Hungary also remained at its usual high levels, total production costs amounting to HUF 110 billion (US$392 million), of which 85 percent was from foreign productions, data from media watchdog NMHH showed. The most expensive production in Hungary last year was the upcoming Terminator movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton at a cost of US$60 million.
The number of movies shot in Hungary also rose to 333 last year from 285 in 2017 and of last year's titles four were co-productions and 84 foreign.
