VAT scandal uncovered during Civic Platform’s rule

The VAT scandal during the Civic Platform (PO) government was an open-door crime, claims editor in chief of “Gazeta Polska” (GP) Tomasz Sakiewicz. The entire tax hole is estimated to have totaled PLN 250 billion.

“Someone purposefully opened the doors to the state treasury, so that thieves could take the money and that happened during PO rule,” Sakiewicz said in an interview for TVP Info.

He believes that PO politicians who had forced tax bills proposed by lobbyists committed an “open-door crime”.

According to former deputy finance minister Elżbieta Chojna-Duch the VAT scandal concerned gigantic sums of money.

“It was the size of the Polish annual budget,” she said. The tax hole was PLN 250 billion, whereas the Polish budget is between PLN 200 and 300 billion, depending on whether it concerns spending or earnings.

Sakiewicz also commented on Donald Tusk’s possible return to Polish politics. “It is unknown whether he is a wave, or just a particle. He himself probably doesn’t know whether he is a Polish or a European politician, but he tries to do both. And it’s even working out,” he said.

The publicist also doubts that Tusk’s return would bode well for PO leader Grzegorz Schetyna, despite the politician’s delight at the idea.
