Beijing warns Warsaw over arrested Huawei director

“Poland is bound to be a loser if it follows the US in taking on Huawei,” claims Chinese government daily Global Times. The publication concerns the apprehension of a Chinese Huawei employee accused of espionage who was arrested in Warsaw last week.

The publication is based on the commentary of Chinese experts. Zhao Junjie from the Chinese Academy of Sciences claims that if “Poland wants to damage ties with China over Huawei, (…) it will be the biggest loser.”

Zhao warns Poland that in such a case China may use so-called trade instruments, which can be understood as economic retaliation. He also believes that Poland should not be “too close” to the US, especially in Huawei’s case.

The daily also quoted anonymous Chinese workers from Warsaw who claim that the detention of the Huawei worker was “groundless”.

Spying operation

Last week, the Polish special services (ABW) detained a Pole and a Chinese under the suspicion of cooperating with Chinese secret services.

Weijing W. was the director of the Polish Huawei department. Piotr D. is a retired high ranking ABW officer, currently a cyber-security expert.
