Polish agriculture suffers after massive drought causes financial losses exceeding PLN 3.6 billion.

The minister of agriculture Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski has promised governmental aid for aggravated farmers and fishermen of PLN 800 million. There have been 1,311 commissions established in 2098 municipalities to calculate the losses, and the afflicted territory covers almost 3.5 million hectares.

Those farmers whose losses have exceeded 70 percent can expect compensation of PLN 1,000 per hectare. Fishermen whose ponds were located in the afflicted municipalities can expect PLN 300 per hectare. Motions can be submitted between September 14th and 28th, 2018.

Harvest of basic grains is 14 percent less than the year before and the harvests of rapeseed and vegetables are lower by 16 and 8 percent

The deadline for motions for farmers who have lost between 30 and 70 percent as well as the level of aid will be announced “after the assessment of damages for those farms has been completed by Voivodship commissions. This should happen in the next few days.”

Statistics Poland released estimates of this year’s harvest: the harvest of basic grains is 24 million tons (14 percent less than the year before) and the harvests of rapeseed and vegetables are lower by 16 and 8 percent.
