Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz has died after being stabbed on stage during a charity event. Despite undergoing a five-hour operation, he unfortunately succumed to his injuries today.

"We lost the fight for his life," a spokesperson from the Municipal Hospital in Gdańsk has confirmed.

Following the stabbing, the mayor was resuscitated and transported to the hospital and was rushed in for emergency surgery. He could not be saved. According to police sources the assailant is 27 year-old Stefan W. from Gdańsk who has a record of violent crime.

Struggle on stage

According to witnesses, the attacker got onto the stage during the final of the Grand Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP) and had screamed that he had served prison time during Civic Platform's rule but that he was wrongly convicted because he was innocent.

During the struggle, the man stabbed Adamowicz with a knife in the stomach and chest. A short film showing the moment of attack was published on Twitter: "Film on attack. First attacks, next speaks and comes to Adamowicz again"

Condemnation from all political parties

The attack has been condemned by PM Mateusz Morawiecki and many other politicians from all political options.

The assault on Paweł Adamowicz’s life merits the highest condemnation. I have ordered Minister of the Interior Joachim Brudziński to inform me of the latest developments concerning the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mayor Adamowicz,” Morawiecki wrote on Twitter.

Minister Brudziński has called the attack an “act of unbelievable barbarity.” Opposition MP Borys Budka said that the attack “was probably a criminal act and cannot be treated as a political one”. Although his political background associates him with Civic Platfrom (PO), Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz won the last election as an independent candidate.

Act of unbelievable barbarity

Polish President Andrzej Duda also sent his prayers and support to mayor Adamowicz:

“Usually we differ with Mayor Paweł Adamowicz in our views concerning public and Polish issues. Today, however, I am unconditionally by his side and those closest to him, as I hope all of our countrymen are. I pray for his swift recovery”.
