Opinion: Poland will not play Israeli tricks

Poland will not allow for the responsibility or co-responsibility of the Holocaust to be attributed to its nation. Jacek Karnowski explains how PM Mateusz Morawiecki’s announcement to cancel his trip to Jerusalem is a decisive sign from the Polish government.

PM Morawiecki’s decision to not participate in the visit to Israel must not have been an easy one. Not only could it transform into some kind of “second” historic-diplomatic “war”, but the V4 summit poses another problem. If it were cancelled, or took place without Poland’s participation, it would be a blow to regional cooperation which is so important to Warsaw.

The Polish-Israeli declaration from last year, in light of Netanyahu’s statements, is now being shown in an ambiguous light.

Through the decision to reduce the rank of the Polish delegation, Poland sends a clear signal, that it will not allow for the responsibility or co-responsibility of the Holocaust to be attributed to us. This is because there wouldn’t have been a Holocaust, if not for Germany and nothing will change that.

Although the press is divided on the matter of Netanyahu’s statement, one thing is clear: the Israeli PM, perhaps intentionally, circled around the issue and he “flirted” with the thesis, that it was our responsibility.

Cancelling the PM trip to Jerusalem is also a signal that Poland will not play in such a way. Poland does not give permission for such tricks. If we are to cooperate, then both sides must play fair and give something. That is why the PM has decided not to attend.

Of course, the opposition will consider this to be an “embarrassment”, also in the context of the Middle East conference. Therefore, everyone should be reminded that this witch-hunt on Poland due to the Holocaust is only possible, because for decades Poland’s good name wasn’t defended and historical politics were attempted to be substituted by an education of shame.

The path to sovereignty is often spinous and painful. Only those who submit their fate to neighboring powers, who doesn’t play individually, who isn’t looking for risky opportunities has an assured toxic “safety”. That is, until the powers decide differently.
