Presidents of the V4 invited to celebrate anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

The presidents of the Visegrad Four have been invited by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to commemorate the anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

The invitation was included in the congratulation letter sent by Steinmeier to Zuzana Čaputová following her victory in the presidential elections in Slovakia.

“The contribution of Slovaks towards the fall of the Berlin Wall has not been forgotten. On the occasion of celebrating the 30thanniversary of the event on the 9thof November 2019, I would like to invite you and your colleagues from Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary to Berlin,” the German president wrote.

Symbol of the Cold War

The Fall of the Berlin Wall is one of the symbols of the end of the Cold War and Communism in Europe. It was 156km long and its system of defenses separated East and West Berlin for 28 years. Many died while trying to escape to West Berlin, estimates report between 136 and 239 casualities. 

The celebrations commemorating the fall of the wall will last from November the 4thto the 10th.
