Is Tusk planning to come home early?

A Polish opposition MP has claimed that President of the European Council Donald Tusk may decide to quit his post before the end of his term of office so that he can come home and lead the opposition.

According to Jacek Protasiewicz, a Polish opposition MP close to the president of the European Council, the cutting short of Donald Tusk’s term of office, which would normally end on December 1st, 2019, is getting serious consideration. Protasiewicz, speaking in a TV interview, said that should the results achieved by the opposition in the European elections in May be unsatisfactory then “an extraordinary situation could call for extraordinary measures.”

The successor to Donald Tusk is likely to be elected by the European Council by the beginning of September. Protasiewicz said that he could easily foresee Donald Tusk leading Poland’s opposition in autumn’s parliamentary elections should the need arise and that such a scenario “is being discussed in Brussels and in the European People’s Party.”

Tusk has called upon Poland’s opposition parties to unite against the ruling Law and Justice party. He has not been shy about intervening with criticism of the present Polish government in his public statements and has intimated that he is thinking of running for president of Poland in 2020.
