US urges unity between Poland and Israel

The US Department of State calls for unity between Poland and Israel after recent controversies. “We call our allies and friends to find a common path to hearing each other out, moving forward and continuing close cooperation and taking care of mutual interests,” reads the Department’s statement.

On Monday, PM Mateusz Morawiecki made the decision not to send a Polish delegation to the V4 summit in Jerusalem. This decision came after the scandalous words of Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz.

Both of them accused Poles of participating in the Holocaust, and Katz in particular had claimed that Poles “suckle anti-Semitism with their mothers’ milk.”

In the US Department of State’s statement, Poland and Israel were described as “important allies and friends” of the United States. It also read that Washington greatly appreciates cooperation with Poland in organizing the Middle East conference and also Israel’s decisive presence in it.

Washington hopes that the conference will help in finding new ways of achieving peace and stability in the Middle East.

US ambassador Mosbacher calls on FM Katz to apologize

The US ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher called on Israel’s acting foreign minister, Yisrael Katz, to apologize to Poland for remarks that have led to the crisis.

“I just felt that two strong allies like Israel and Poland, of course they are strong allies of the United States, shouldn’t be using that kind of rhetoric. We are too important to each other not to work these things out,” the ambassador said on Wednesday.

The worsening of relations between Poland and Israel has also been commented on by the Head of the World Jewish Congress, Ronald Lauder. “It is very unfortunate, for both Jews and Poles, that such negative and insulting stereotypes are still being used," he said.
