Macron was one of the few who was able to gain the sympathy of Trump and there was no need to be a dictator in doing so. He invited him for dinner at the Eiffel Tower and emphasized the importance of French-American relationships based on First World War examples. It is doubtful if he was able to convince Trump about the value of an alliance, but, at least he tried.

Macron continues his rhetoric while visiting European cities and explaining his views on the European Union. This kind of discussion usually does not extend beyond the borders of nation states. This is a novum, even if a symbolic one.

Considering Macron’s connection to symbology the location of his visit is arrogant – in the Primate Palace where Napoleon signed a treaty which symbolized his triumph in the region.
