European Commission representatives have sent letters criticizing Poland for introducing policies that oppose LGBT promotion, in what some media outlets in Poland may be the first step towards freezing EU funding to Poland over the issue.

Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy Marc Lemaitre and Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion Joost Korte have sent letters to the marshals of the Polish states of Łódzkie, Świętokrzyskie, Podkarpackie and Lesser Poland, which are also known as voivodships.

The European Commission representatives wrote that “the Commission would like to emphasize that establishing zones which are free of LGBT or in which the LGBT community is unwanted, are actions in opposition to the values outlined in the second article of the Treaty of the European Union.”

They demanded “an evaluation of the risks of discrimination” and “strengthening actions which would promote equality and non-discrimination due to sexual orientation” from the Polish state marshals.

According to Polish news portal Gazeta Wyborcza, the move from the European Commission suggests EU representatives want Polish municipalities to spend money on promoting LGBT ideology and education, and if they will not abide these demands, then EU funds for Poland may be “frozen”.

“This will reflect on the evaluation of the state of rule of law and human rights in Poland,” claims an unnamed Polish source quoted by the paper.

There are already political actors in the EU who have promoted the idea of connecting European Commission funds with abiding undefined rule of law and “European values”, which are increasingly aimed at countries like Hungary and Poland.
