Herbert Kickl, newly elected President of Austria’s Freedom Party (FPÖ), wrote a letter to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán thanking him for his relentless work in defending European values, Orbán’s press secretary Bertalan Havasi told national news agency MTI on Tuesday.

Herbert Kickl wrote that Orbán does not watch idly as a Europe of homelands becomes a Europe without homelands. “Yes to cooperation, no to unification,” Kickl stressed. The chairman of the FPÖ went on to add:

“Nor can we look on while a prominent clique denies our real life, which sees gender theory and the raising of the rainbow flag as the ultimate standard of all things against the will of the majority. One needs to be sober.”

Kickl appreciated the excellent relations with Hungary and recalled that he had also sought constructive dialogue with the Hungarians in his position as leader of the parliamentary faction.

“From now on, on behalf of the entire Freedom Party, I cherish the fruitful exchange of experiences with our Hungarian friends,” he said.

Kickl wrote to Orbán in his capacity as the President of Fidesz, saying he could only welcome Orbán’s unwavering commitment to the interests of Hungary, and at the same time expressed his joy that the strategic cooperation between Fidesz and the FPÖ could grow in the future.

The FPÓ president assured Orbán that the entire Hungarian people would find an ally in them when it comes to taking a bold stand for common goals, such as preserving Christian identity, tightening migration policy, effectively protecting the EU’s external borders, maintaining nation-state sovereignty, and protecting the Union.

Orbán earlier wrote a congratulatory letter to Kickl when he was elected party president, saying that the cooperation between Fidesz and the Austrian Freedom Party provides a solid basis for the development of Hungarian-Austrian bilateral relations and for resolving issues affecting the future of Europe. Orbán looks forward to working together and assures his party chairman colleague that he can count on the support of Fidesz in achieving common goals.

Kickl served as Minister of Interior of Austria between 2017 and 2019.
