The German Constitutional Court has challenged the authority of the European Union’s top court in a new court decision, which will likely have far-reaching effects on the entire European legal system as well as countries like Hungary and Poland who are fighting for their sovereignty, MEP of the German right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) Gunnar Beck told Hungarian daily Magyar Hírlap in an interview.

Beck was referring to the German Constitutional Court’s decision that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) overstepped its mandate when it rubber-stamped a European bond issue scheme designed to alleviate a monetary crisis may in a ruling last week.

“Before becoming an MEP, I was also involved in this case as a lawyer. This is a colossal success for the litigators and their legal counsel because it is the first time the German Constitutional Court has ruled that the ECJ has overstepped its mandate,” Beck said. “The truth is that the highest court of the European Union does not respect the Union’s own laws and that is the essence of the BVerG (Constitutional Court) ruling.”
