A Netflix documentary about the Holocaust has sparked protest in Poland after depicting German death camps within modern Polish borders without any context. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has responded by sending a letter to Netflix’s CEO concerning the historic inaccuracies to raise concerns on behalf of the Polish government.

In the first episode of the documentary series, “The Devil Next Door”, about the Ukrainian war criminal Ivan Demjanjuk, a modern map of Europe and Poland appears with several German concentration and death camps, such as Auschwitz, Treblinka and Majdanek marked on it.

Considering the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia are present, the map is most likely from the early 1990s. Social media users pointed out, however, that there is no explanation in the series regarding why the marked camps were located in Polish territory, which was occupied by Germany during the war.

Rewriting history

Morawiecki wrote a letter to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in which he explained that such mistakes might mean little to Netflix’s creators but are very “harmful” to Poland.
