United States President Ronald Reagan’s statue in Warsaw was defaced by culprits who sprayed it with pro-abortion and anti-government slogans this weekend.

According to TVP.info, some phrases sprayed on the statue include “pro abo”, “d*ck” and the so-called “eight stars”, which among protester against the Law and Justice (PiS) ruling conservative government means, “f*ck PiS”.

Leading Polish historian Sławomir Cenckiewicz posted about the attack on Twitter and supplied a picture of the defaced statue.

“Leftist savages have just destroyed the statue of the just American! Are they supposed to be on ‘the right side of history’?”

The attack comes after a number of churches were also attacked over the weekend in Poland. Protesters are angry about a new landmark ruling from Poland’s Constitutional Court, which announced that eugenic abortion for fetuses with potential disabilities, such as Down syndrome, is unconstitutional.

Other commentators also pointed out the associations of left-wing activists with post-communist elites, and also echoed the words of US ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher, who controversially claimed that by not supporting the LGBT movement, Poland is on the “wrong side of history”.

One social media user referred to Mosbacher’s criticism of Polish society: “I wonder how the US embassy will react to this? Will it criticize the leftist act of barbarism or will it blame the entire Polish nation?”

Former US army colonel and attaché to Poland, Ray Wojcik, is another person who referred to the attack on Reagan’s statue, expressing his shock by emphasizing that Reagan had been a “champion of Polish liberty, including rights to assemble and protest”. He added that the culprits had shown a “phenomenal” ignorance of history.

People commenting on social media also emphasized Reagan’s role in defeating communism, with one user writing, “They destroyed the statue of the great enemy of communism, a significant sign from the left.”

“At the head of these savages stand the children of the communist party’s activists — a little revenge from them after a few decades,” wrote another user.

Reagan was also an outspoken opponent of abortion. Among his most well-known sayings on the subject is: “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.”
