In a rare show of unity, the Polish Parliament voted 452 to one for a resolution which called on the European Union, NATO and Germany to halt the construction of the German-Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The Polish Sejm, in solidarity with our Central European neighbors threatened by Russia expansionism, especially Ukraine, calls on the EU and its member states, in particular Germany as our NATO ally and partner in the EU, to withdraw support for the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project and to take steps to stop its construction,” the text of the resolution reads.

Poland’s Parliament appealed in the name of values on which the EU is based, including solidarity with Ukraine and ensuring stability and security in Europe, in order to increase the Union’s resistance to Russian pressure.

The resolution also calls upon the U.S. to maintain and broaden sanctions on entities which are participating in the construction of the pipeline.

“Further political and economic pressure from the USA could stop this damaging project and lead to strengthening of cooperation among NATO allies,” the statement reads.

The Polish Sejm concludes the resolution by expressing the conviction that the continuation of Nord Stream 2 constitutes permission for Russian policy based on abuse of international standards, human rights and the violation of territorial integrity of neighboring states, and increasing pressure on EU and NATO member states.
