Recent events in Belarus and the attempt on the life of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny should be a red flag for Germany in context of its continued support for the Russian-backed Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told Bloomberg TV
Morawiecki said that due to Russian actions, he would try to convince Germany to abandon its Nord Stream 2 (NS2) construction project.
“I believe that the decision-makers will change their minds. They’ve already essentially admitted that the pipeline is a political project, because without political engagement this project would’ve been already abandoned,” he said.
Poland’s leader warned that a lack of response from Germany to Russian actions should not only change Germany’s position on Nord Stream 2 but also the EU’s.
“Given the recent events In Belarus where Putin is clearly threatening an intervention and given what he did to Navalny, this should be the final call for Germany in terms of their position on NS2,” he pointed out.
The Polish prime minister emphasized that Nord Stream 2 is a very dangerous project for Ukraine, as they would be completely cut off from transmissions fees and the ability to transmit gas from Russia.
