Poland out of Marrakesh agreement

Poland will not sign the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). “This isn’t a method which would help contain the migration crisis – it would compound it and compound its effects,” said minister of national defense Mariusz Błaszczak.

The Polish government has declared that it will not support the GCM at the upcoming Marrakesh conference or at the United Nations General Assembly.

The government information centre (CIR) has declared in a dispatch that “the document has not fulfilled Poland’s demands concerning the confirmation of strong guarantees of sovereign laws to decide which countries they will accept into their borders. As well as differentiation between legal and illegal migration.”

The dispatch also underlined that the lack of such differentiation could lead to “significant difficulties in interpretation and implementation of the conduct.”

This isn’t a method which would help contain the migration crisis – it would compound the crisis and compound its effects

“We believe that this is not a good solution,” said minister Błaszczak. “This isn’t a method which would help contain the migration crisis – it would compound the crisis and compound its effects.”

During the summit in Marrakesh in July 2018, Poland and other states supported the UN’s project. Over the course of the next months, however, voices in opposition to the GCM became more prevalent.

Poland is not the only country which will not support the GCM. Last year, the USA withdrew from works on the conduct. Hungary and Austria declared a rejection of the conduct at a later date. A few days ago, Bulgaria also declared a lack of support for the project.
