PM Babiš: Some Spitzenkandidaten dislike V4

It was important that none of the "Spitzenkandidaten" received majority support for the post of the new head of the European Commission last week, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said at the opening of the Conference of Economic Diplomats.

"It is important that none of the "Spitzenkandidaten" got elected since some of them do not like the V4. That is why it is important for the Czech Republic and the V4 that the next President of the European Commission does not get involved in politics and implements the conclusions of the European Council,” said Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.

According to the so-called "Spitzenkandidaten" system, the candidate who was a nominee of his faction in the EP elections, should obtain the support of the European Parliament and become the President of the European Commission.

However, that did not happen, and the EU Member States leaders will meet again on Sunday June 30th. According to PM Babiš, it is important to make a quick decision as the constituent meeting of the newly-elected European Parliament is held on July 2nd.

PM Babiš considers the internal market, trade, and foreign policy to be the most important topics for the Czech Republic. The most important, however, is to negotiate the EU budget for 2021-2027.

“It is important to carry through our goals. Currently, the EU determines the agenda instead of the Member States specifying their objectives,” PM Babiš said.

Furthermore, the Czech Prime Minister identifies the climate issue as one of the important topics. He reiterated that nuclear energy is a strategic source for the Czech Republic. Achieving the so-called carbon neutrality by 2050 would, according to Babiš, mean the end of internal combustion engines and diesel cars.
