Politics have become a comedy that reflects our new reality

Who wins elections is becoming increasingly less important, as the victor will want to, or will have to, carry out the will of uncontrollable lobbies and companies or foreign governments, writes Polish historian and columnist Jerzy Targalski

The victory of showman Slavi Trifonov in Bulgarian parliamentary elections has forced me to reflect on a phenomenon we are seeing more and more. Why are politicians being replaced by television celebrities?

For now, it is just satirists but soon enough an actor playing a doctor in a television show or a singer may triumph in European elections.

People can see that all the hitherto parties have failed since they have transformed into cooperatives of parasites which fight only for taking the highest number of state positions possible and the creation of their own family, clan and client networks.

The hope that someone new will finally change the current situation has created a search which has been abused by various scammers, crazies or at the very least, mentally unstable people who are manipulated by out-of-control groups who hold real power.

One needs only look at the Polish parliament to become convinced that such a gathering of horrors could not have been created naturally.

The desperation which forces us to vote for something new is magnified by the progressing process of a stupefying society, which is the result of the perfect cooperation between education and media to create mindless humans lacking critical thinking. It is therefore not surprising that parliaments are changing into circus arenas and politicians are being replaced by showmen.

The traditional party had some sort of vision of politics — a program which involved preaching on rules and idea which it tried to fulfill. Today, all of this has lost meaning as parliaments are no longer a place for discussion and decision-making. All the important decisions are being made outside of parliaments and to an increasingly greater extent, outside of governments themselves.

Who wins elections is becoming increasingly less important, as the victor will want to, or will have to, carry out the will of uncontrollable lobbies and companies or foreign governments.

Politics is being replaced by a circus and a comedy show and politicians by media circus performers.
