A 44-year-old Syrian man living in the Austrian city of Klagenfurt is standing trial for abusing, beating, imprisoning, and threatening his 35-year-old wife and their eight children, aged 5 through 18, for years. The abuse also had religious Islamic motives, according to prosecutors.
In early November, at 1 p.m., police officers were called to the apartment in Klagenfurt due to a noise complaint regarding a family dispute. The 44-year-old husband had allegedly repeatedly punched his wife in the face several times, resulting in injury.
An investigation revealed that the man not only beat his wife that day but had been beating her for years. He had also systematically locked up his children and beat them. For example, he forced his 16-year-old daughter, under threat of assault, not to leave the apartment outside of school hours.
Police determined the man constantly beat his wife and threatened her with death, according to Krone newspaper.
Now, the man is standing trial in Carinthia, and prosecutors are accusing him of subjugating his wife through Islam.
“The mom wasn’t allowed to do anything anymore,” the son told investigators.
The man is accused of ruling his household through an Islamic code of complete control, which was based on the man upholding his honor.
Prosecutors said in Klagenfurt Regional Court that due to his Islamic interpretation, the suspect believed that as “the man, he has the right to decide about his wife.”
However, this translated into severe abuse.
It is far from the first time Remix News has reported on abusive relationships through an Islamic interpretation. In fact, it is the type of case increasingly seen throughout Europe.
Such cases have involved polygamy, murder, abused children, and vengeful husbands, some of whom are willing to murder their wives or ex-wives right in front of their children.
Just a few days ago, a Turkish man stabbed his wife to death in the German city of Ingolstadt.
Last month, a Chechen man slaughtered his wife on the streets of Nice, France, while she was holding their two-year-old daughter. Despite multiple court trials for domestic violence, in which he walked free three times, he was able to come back and murder his wife, in what is being described as a complete security failure.
In Belgium, Afghan Mohammad Khawari was arrested for stabbing three people to death, including his wife, in late September.
