Europe should prompt a Sargentini Report, not Hungary

The very title of the report makes it abundantly clear that the Sargentini Report is not about the Hungarian government, but Hungary itself. The (Hungarian) left has made a mistake by voting against the country and I’m not aware of any political force that would so diligently attack its own country as the “left” here. Domestic political debates should be conducted at home.

By voting for the Sargentini Report, the Hungarian opposition has sided with the pro-migration European forces, further alienating its voter base, which will show at the European Parliament elections next year.

Szili is one of the rare dissidents from the Hungarian left. Formerly a prominent member of the Socialist Party, she was Speaker of the House from 2002 to 2009 during two subsequent Socialist-Free Democrat coalition governments. She left the party in 2010 and now serves as the Prime Minister’s special envoy for autonomy issues of the Hungarian minorities living in neighboring countries.

Szili said there are many issues in which Brussels has failed to represent European interests. All recent elections have shown a growing strength of parties that defended country and national interests, opposing migration.

“The European Union is now attempting to take revenge after realizing that it has mishandled the issue of migration. It is too late for them to speak about the defense of the Schengen borders”

Hungary has been doing this for the past three years and demonstrated its ability to defend the national and EU borders.

Speaking about the Hungarian opposition, Szili said they lack a personality or political force with a coherent world view. These parties don’t stand a chance until they make some changes in that respect. “This is especially true given that the current governing parties do have a coherent world view. Viktor Orbán has outlined one running to the year 2030 and is tailoring its policies in line with it.”
