An illegal immigrant of sub-Saharan origin has been arrested in La Laguna, Tenerife, after allegedly attempting to rape a young woman and injuring both her and a taxi driver who came to her aid.

The incident took place on Monday afternoon in Plaza del Cristo, according to reports from El Burgado.

The victim was returning from a funeral home after attending a wake for a deceased relative when the attacker lunged at her. She suffered multiple bruises during the struggle.

A nearby taxi driver witnessed the assault, abandoned his vehicle, and rushed to help. The suspect then turned on him, leaving him with injuries that required hospital treatment.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with National Police officers arriving at the scene and subduing the attacker. He was taken to a local police station for questioning and remains in custody. Authorities have not disclosed his exact nationality, but confirmed he was of sub-Saharan origin.

The woman later filed a formal complaint at the police station, and the taxi driver is expected to do so after he is discharged from the hospital.

The suspect is expected to appear before a court once police complete their initial investigations.

Santiago Abascal, leader of the right-wing Vox party, took to social media to lament the rise in migrant crime enveloping Spain.

“Today again. Every day, our women, mothers, and daughters are attacked. Every day, the government of the PSOE and the PP remain silent. Feminism disappears when the rapist is not Spanish,” he wrote on X.

Abascal linked his remarks to the above case and a separate rape that occurred in Bilbao this week, where a 24-year-old woman was assaulted by a 19-year-old man of North African origin.

According to El Correo, the victim was hospitalized for bleeding and pain in her genital area.
