Former Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic has informed the competent authorities that a foreign criminal organization was planning to assassinate him, the Montenegrin public broadcaster (RTCG), reported on Saturday.

The Montenegrin police have issued several statements on the matter, all of which say that they have not yet confirmed that such a plan is legitimate, that they have not been informed of any such plan, and that neither the former head of state nor the security services have requested their involvement.

The website of the Podgorica daily Pobjeda and the news portal Vijesti also reported on Saturday that an organized crime group in Belgrade was reported to be planning an assassination attempt against Milo Djukanovic, but that the group had members not only in Serbia but also in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania.

In 2016, there was already an attempted coup against the then government led by Djukanovic, and an assassination attempt against the president was allegedly attempted.

On Friday, the case related to this assassination attempt was concluded and all defendants were acquitted.
