The award was more of a formality. Following a fantastic season in which Lewandowski triumphed in the UEFA Champion League, the footballer was recognized by fans, coaches and his colleagues, who chose him as the Best FIFA Men’s Player. The award was presented during a virtual ceremony on Thursday night in Zurich.
Only a few days ago, it was announced that the Polish forward was at the very top of the list, along with Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) and Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona). Yet, he ended up besting the two football legends.
The majority of voters, however, had no doubts about the previous season belonging to Robert Lewandowski. He won everything possible with Bayern: the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the German Cup (DFB-Pokal). In all of these tournaments, Lewandowski was the top scorer. This is the first time Lewandowski haswon the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award. He was previously chosen as UEFA’s 2019-2020 Men’s Player of the Year in October, but this FIFA title will be Lewandowski’s most prestigious recognition. The captain of the Polish national team expressed his thanks for the award on social media: Congratulations to the Polish football star came flooding in for his incredible success. President Andrzej Duda even congratulated him, thanking Lewandowski for his patriotic attitude. PM Mateusz Morawiecki also offered his congratulations, emphasizing that Lewandowski had made history once again as the first Pole to be declared the best footballer in the world.
