With Christmas right around the corner, Poland’s former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took to X to thank current Prime Minister Donald Tusk for his gift to Poles this holiday season: high inflation.
“This year, Poles will get something special for Christmas from the government… EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH PRICES! How do you feel about this?” he posted, along with a video attacking Tusk’s reversal of zero VAT on food.
W tym roku Polacy dostaną na gwiazdkę od rządu coś wyjątkowego… WYJĄTKOWĄ DROŻYZNĘ! Jak Wasze nastroje?

The video addresses the impact of the government’s tax policy on how families will be able to celebrate this Christmas.
“The holidays are getting closer. This year, unfortunately, they are marked by skyrocketing prices. How will this affect Christmas Eve tables in Polish homes? It’s scary. Donald Tusk’s government has eliminated the relief in the form of zero VAT on food. Now, thanks to this scandalous decision, we can see the first effects: butter has doubled in price, a basket of 14 basic food products cost PLN 99 just a month ago, and now it has broken the psychological barrier of PLN 100 and is still increasing,” he said.
Polish households have been suffering from high prices on food, energy, and housing, with no relief in sight. And Morawiecki’s post is a refreshing take in the wake of PiS presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki saying that, as president, there will be little he can do about the price of butter.
Unfortunately, no matter what the president can or cannot do, this may have not been the right comment in Poland’s current inflationary environment. https://t.co/4yyQjUc2vc

Morawiecki has also announced on his YouTube channel that he is launching a Q&A series to hear directly from Polish citizens, reports Do Rzeczy.
“If you had the opportunity to ask Mateusz Morawiecki one question, what would it be? Economics, politics, the future of Poland, or maybe something completely different? Let me know what interests you the most. I am waiting for your suggestions in the comments until tomorrow at 10:00,” the former PiS prime minister wrote in the “community” tab.
Some questions that have popped up include: “How will the prime minister respond to the recently published memoirs of Angela Merkel? The former chancellor continues to refuse to acknowledge the mistakes of Germany’s policy towards Russia. Is this just the egoism of one politician or a deeper systemic problem of the German state?”
Another asked: “What will be your first decision when you become prime minister again?”
“What do you think of Karol Nawrocki’s chances in the presidential election? What do you think are his strengths and what should he still work on?” was another.

This winter season will be tough for Poles. And being able to feel like you have a say or are at least being heard by even a former prime minister is important. Good move by Morawiecki, but will it help PiS in the presidential election next spring?
