On the way to the airport in Stuttgart, Germany, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s police escort was hit by a car. One police officer died and another was seriously injured.

The accident occurred at around 11.15 a.m. at Albplatz in Stuttgart (Degerloch district) when a 69-year-old woman in her BMW ignored the barrier in place for the convoy and hit the police escort.

The woman turned left into Löffelstrasse at the Rubensstrasse junction, hitting the motorcycle of a 61-year-old police officer who was escorting Orbán’s car. Due to the force of the impact, the police vehicle was thrown onto the service vehicle of another officer (27), who had blocked the intersection for traffic

A younger officer was also severely wounded.

“We are deeply shocked by the accident involving our colleague. The tragic circumstances surrounding the death of our esteemed colleague leave us stunned and affect the entire Stuttgart police force to the core,” said Stuttgart Police Commissioner Markus Eisenbraun.

Orbán was not injured during the tragic accident.

Bertalan Havasi, Orbán’s press chief, stated that the Hungarian prime minister sent a letter of condolence to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the police head of Stuttgart.

Photos of the accident were also posted to social media.

Orbán was in Germany for the European Football Championship match between Hungary and Scotland. The previous evening, he had watched the Hungarian national team’s victory against Scotland in the preliminary round of the European Championship in Stuttgart’s MHP Arena.

He planned on returning to Budapest at lunchtime. The accident then occurred around eight kilometers before his arrival at the airport.
