Will Poland become the new Norway of Europe, enjoying billions in oil proceeds? At least, that is the hope after Central European Petroleum discovered the largest oil deposit in the nation’s history.

“This is a historic moment for the Polish energy sector,” said Rolf G. Skaar, CEO of Central European Petroleum, while announcing the new discovery.

The company discovered the oil deposit approximately 6 kilometers off the coast from Świnoujście, using the Wola East 1 (WE1) well drilled in the Baltic Sea.

The announcement stated that the discovered field could contain 22 million tonnes of recoverable hydrocarbons in the form of crude oil and condensate and 5 billion cubic meters of commercial-grade gas.

According to estimates, the total resources of the Wolin concession include over 33 million tonnes of recoverable crude oil and condensate and 27 billion cubic meters of commercial-quality gas.

The company noted that this is the largest conventional oil discovery in Polish history, and at the same time one of the largest in Europe in the last decade.

The CEO emphasized that his company views this discovery as a foundation for the long-term, responsible development of Polish marine resources.

“Wolin East is more than just a promising deposit—it’s a shared opportunity to unlock the full geological and energy potential of the Baltic Sea,” said Skaar,.

Krzysztof Galos, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Climate and Environment and Chief National Geologist, believes that the Wolin East discovery could prove to be a breakthrough in the history of hydrocarbon exploration in Poland.

“If this discovery is ultimately confirmed, the Wolin East field could become the largest deposit of crude oil and associated natural gas ever discovered in Poland,” he pointed out.

According to Galos, the future development of this deposit could significantly contribute to strengthening Poland’s energy security and reducing its dependence on external hydrocarbon suppliers. However, he emphasized that this is conditional upon the prior fulfillment of all necessary formal requirements for its exploitation.

The Wolin concession was issued by the Ministry of Climate and Environment. It covers an area of 593 square kilometers.
