With invectives flying left and right, the Hungarian Parliament has kicked off the debate on a draft resolution submitted by MPs of the senior ruling Fidesz party, Gergely Gulyás and Máté Kocsis entitled “On the defense of Hungary’s sovereignty and the rejection of slanders against Hungary”.

The Sargentini Report, which states that Hungary is violating the values of the European Union, calls for the activation of Article 7 of the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty which was passed with a two-thirds majority by the European Parliament on September 12. It may ultimately lead to the suspension of Hungary’s voting rights in the Community institutions.

Former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, leader of the opposition Democratic Coalition (pictured above)  said “we have seen such rotten systems as yours and they all fell, as will you. You are bastards in the political and ethical sense.”

Kocsis, one of the sponsors of the resolution said the Sargentini Report was a political attack and that they reject the false claims in it.

“We are determined to safeguard Christian culture, European borders and the safety of Europeans”

Bertalan Tóth, leader of the opposition Socialists said “the migration crisis should be solved through European cooperation but (the ruling party) Fidesz wants to keep it alive”.

Gulyás, the other sponsor of the resolution said no dictate or accusation from the European Parliament can force the Hungarian government to change its migration policy and that the pro-migration report attacks Hungary for protecting European borders.

Parliament is expected to vote on the resolution in mid-October.
