The Advent Basilica on Szent István tér and the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas on Vörösmarty tér are open starting today with cultural programs and a wide range of handicrafts and gastronomy. Both markets draw tourists throughout the holiday season who can enjoy Hungarian treats, spiced wine, and lots of shopping.

In the middle of Vörösmarty tér, the Vörösmarty statue will be surrounded by a spectacular snow globe and an LED wall will serve as a decorative element and multimedia information point, said Hungarian actress Anita Ábel, hostess of Vörösmarty Classic Xmas.

Just like last year, a mobile phone game that can be activated with a QR code will also be launched, master blacksmiths will demonstrate the tricks of their trade in the visual workshop, and children can travel on the light railway for free. Those coming from Váci utca to Vörösmarty tér will be greeted by a large Christmas tree lit up in green and red.

This year’s Advent Basilica has several new features, such as the light net evoking a starry sky, a 12-meter-high Christmas tree with a stage around it, and Santa’s chair, according to Lázár Kovács, the host of the Advent Basilica.

There will be live concerts and cultural productions several times a week, while the 3D light painting projected on the facade of the Basilica can be seen every half hour from 5:30 p.m. every day.

There is, of course, the Bethlehem manger in front of the Basilica and a massive Advent wreath, whose candles are lit on Sundays. The Basilica will also again house charity initiatives, such as the Hungarian Ecumenical Aid Organization and the Together for Autists Foundation.

Last year, BBJ reported that Budapest recorded 4 million guest nights for the November-December period.
