Hungarian-American relations are entering a “golden age” with Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president, declared Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó during a press conference in Budapest on Tuesday. He highlighted the potential for unprecedented cooperation between the two nations.

Szijjártó shared details of his recent U.S. trip with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, which included a three-hour meeting at Mar-a-Lago with President-elect Trump, national security adviser Mike Waltz, and Elon Musk, who is leading a new government efficiency ministry.

The minister emphasized the ongoing relationship between Orbán and Trump, which has included frequent communication even during Trump’s time out of office.

“The prime minister and the president-elect have maintained regular consultations, so it’s only natural for them to continue this relationship,” Szijjártó remarked. He underscored the meeting’s significance, noting that digitalization and artificial intelligence — spearheaded by Musk and his companies — will play pivotal roles in shaping the global economic hierarchy.

The Hungarian foreign minister expressed optimism about deepening ties with the U.S., stating, “The Hungarian-American political system is facing a golden age.” He also lauded Trump’s election as a victory for global pro-peace forces and those advocating for peace in Ukraine.

Szijjártó cautioned against irresponsible decisions by the U.S. or Europe that could hinder future peacemaking efforts before January 2025. Meanwhile, he reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to its peace mission, referencing recent diplomatic engagements, including Orbán’s meeting with Pope Francis and Szijjártó’s own trips to Moscow, Washington, Malta, and Florida.

As Hungary intensifies its peace diplomacy, Szijjártó announced further upcoming events aimed at advancing the nation’s mission to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine.
