The threats and interference keep coming from Ukraine, as Budapest faces parliamentary elections next month. Now, the commander of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, Dmytro Yaros, who enjoys close ties to the Ukrainian government, called on Hungarian voters to vote for opposition leader Péter Magyar in order to “restore friendly relations with the Ukrainians.”
Dmytro Yaros also issued a death threat to Viktor Orbán in January, reports Magyar Nemzet. Yaros is close friends with the former head of the Ukrainian secret service, the SBU, and was an advisor to Valery Zaluzhnyi, who, as the Ukrainian Chief of Staff, allegedly gave the order to blow up the Nord Stream pipeline.
In his statement, Yaros added that a change of government “will be good for Hungary, it will be good for Ukraine and the nation states of Europe.” Ukraine has also said it would send observers to monitor the Hungarian election.
Ukraine has been aggressively pushing for Peter Magyar’s Tisza party to take power in Hungary, as that would eliminate Hungary’s veto in Brussels against weapons, money, and EU membership for Ukraine.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just last week posted a video in which he stated that “Hungary will never be a Ukrainian colony. Zelensky does not command here!”
Meanwhile, Kyiv has still not opened the Friendship oil pipeline, while “knowing exactly that it is vital for Hungary and Slovakia,” he added, noting that this is Zelensky’s way of trying to create a crisis in Hungary just ahead of the April elections.
Orbán’s own family has come under threat, while the rhetoric out of leading figures in Kyiv has become increasingly violent. Earlier this month, a former SBU head said: ” “We will tear out your stinking tongue and throw it to the dogs. Your neo-Nazi blood will flow into the Danube faster than Moscow oil through the Friendship Pipeline.”
And just this past weekend, Magyar Nemzet also reported on a Facebook group post showing a target on Orbán’s head, with equally disturbing comments. According to screenshots published by the Firewall Group, several commenters made comments that were openly suggestive of violence, often extremely rude and unacceptable. For example, one commenter said: “Pull the trigger. The aim is good.”
One Tisza supporter talks of sending a Ukrainian sniper for Orbán, while another member of the group in question is an actual Békés County leader of the Tisza Party.
These threats come after Zelensky threatened to send soldiers to Orbán’s home, a statement that was condemned across Europe, including by EU officials in Brussels.
