Gergely Gulyás, the minister leading the Prime Minister’s Office, gave a show of support to his former colleague Judit Varga.
Gulyás read out a question from a follower in a Facebook video message asking about Hungary’s former justice minister returning to political life: “Please do something to ensure that Judit Varga returns, I have never seen such a huge backlash as has now arisen regarding Judit Varga. Please do something for her, thank you!”
Gulyás replied: “I read it out, with this we can send a message to Judit Varga to come back!”
Rumors have been circulating about Varga coming back to politics for months, with even PM Orbán commenting on the matter, offering up words of praise for his former justice minister.
Most recently, a Hungarian band wrote a song imploring her to return to the Fidesz ranks.
The former minister told 444 last July that she had no interest: “In this race, where they give points to a person like the formation called Péter Magyar, then I don’t want to run in this race.”
Nevertheless, the posts and public comments keep rolling in, making any eventual return less and less surprising.
Varga had resigned in early 2024 along with President Katalin Novák over a pardon given by Novák to Endre Kónya, who had been convicted of covering up an orphanage pedophile scandal. Varga’s signature had also been mandated on the pardon.
Although we hear very little in the press about Novák, there has been a lot of noise surrounding Varga, especially as her ex-husband is opposition leader Péter Magyar.
