If it seems as if most violent criminals in Europe today are migrant men, judging from the many videos and reports of such acts that can be found online, it’s not a baseless assumption. The numbers show that this is indeed the case in one of Europe’s largest capital cities: Berlin.

The German newspaper Junge Freiheit delved into the statistics recorded by the city’s police to see what could be learned. It turns out that in 2024, 14,726 individuals were charged with committing violent crimes in the German capital. Some 12,284 of these, or 83.4 percent, were men, while 6,407, or 52.2 percent, of those did not possess a German passport.

This represents an extremely disproportionate crime rate, given that the number of non-German citizens residing in the German capital is only 24.8 percent.

Last year was not an anomaly, either. In 2023, there were 13,490 people accused of committing violent crimes in Berlin, of which 11,325, or 84 percent, were men. Of those, 50.5 percent were not German citizens. Migrants were still in the majority – and the number of crimes they allegedly committed rose in the following year.

Junge Freiheit pointed out that police records do not indicate whether a suspect who is a German citizen has dual citizenship or is a naturalized migrant. Many of these suspects were either born to foreign parents or recently acquired citizenship. For example, Berlin’s prosecutor has said that three out of four organized crime clan members in Berlin have German citizenship. Every time they commit a crime, it is listed as a German committing a crime, which severely skews the crime statistics. Thus, the number of criminals of non-German origin may in fact be higher than these figures indicate.

The number of migrant youths suspected of committing violent gang-related crimes is lower, yet still disproportionate in terms of their percentage of the population. Last year, 3,454 youths were accused of committing acts of gang-related violence, while 1,323 of them, or 38.3 percent, were not German citizens. Many of these youths were born to foreign parents and automatically received citizenship at birth, which again, skews the statistics. Other countries, such as Denmark, keep statistics on crime rates of second-generation migrants, and in terms of violent crime, they have even higher rates of crime than the first generation.

In 2023, there were 2,602 youths accused of gang-related violent crimes, including 916 non-German citizens, or 35.2 percent. This indicates that there was a 32.7 percent increase in crimes committed by migrant youths in the following year.

The number of murders in the German capital is rising sharply as well. While 77 cases of murder and manslaughter were recorded during 2023, last year there were 117, representing an increase of 51.9 percent.

Cases of “politically motivated” crime, as well as crimes recorded as having been spurred by a foreign or religious ideology, are often an indicator of Islamist-inspired violence. They rose dramatically in the city last year, likely as a result of increased conflict in the Middle East. 8,309 incidents of politically-motivated crimes were recorded in 2024 – an increase of 1,881, or 29.3 percent, over the previous year.

There were likewise 2,650 cases of crimes motivated by a “foreign ideology,” an increase of 169.3 percent over the previous year, as well as 470 incidents of crimes resulting from “religious ideology,” an increase of 123.8 percent.

Junge Freiheit further observed that the number of violent crimes committed by left-wing extremists is higher than those committed by alleged right-wing extremists: 133 to 89, respectively. It is nevertheless the case that right-wingers are more frequently accused of crimes in general: 2,782 were recorded in 2024, 1,599 of which were related to “propaganda.” Only 684 incidents of crimes committed by leftists were recorded.
