Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will be meeting U.S. President Donald Trump in D.C. next week to promote peace, further discuss the Budapest Peace Summit, and achieve greater economic cooperation.
He told Kossuth Radio that they have been preparing for this meeting with Trump for a long time, telling Kossuth Radio that it is “almost having a Hungarian day in Washington, economic leaders, several ministers, and the national security adviser will be present,” reports Magyar Nemzet.
“There will be a complete overview of US-Hungarian relations. Of course, the most important element of this is peace, but an American-Hungarian economic cooperation will also be established,” he said.
Speaking of the potential benefits for the Hungarian people, Orbán noted that “American investments are coming to Hungary one after another.” Still, he emphasized that investors must be assured of certain costs here in Hungary, such as energy costs and access, before deciding on a long-term investment.
“Since we have no sea, we are vulnerable to transit routes,” he said. Adding that Germany has now also asked for an exemption to Russian sanctions, even though it has a coastline, he noted that they still should have the right to seek exemption, as should every state.
He then laughed that Hungary is still being attacked for seeking an exemption despite having a serious geographical barrier to receiving oil and gas.
Reiterating his stance on peace in Ukraine, the prime minister criticized EU leaders for banging their war drums, making fun of the name, “Coalition of the Willing.”
“They are willing to send others to war to die,” he said, highlighting the continued conflict between the EU and the U.S. “Only the United States of America wants peace.”
Taking aim at the agenda of the opposition Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, Orbán told viewers: “Since war requires money, money, and money, whoever supports Ukraine and the war at the same time also supports tax increases and the withdrawal of money from national governments, because Brussels has no money.”
