As some of Europe’s most prominent leaders descend on Washington today to meet with President Donald Trump, many are raising the alarm about the lack of a Polish delegation. In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki is appealing for calm, saying he has a direct line to Trump.

Monday is another day that could determine Ukraine’s future. A meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky will begin at 1:00 p.m. local time, and 7:00 p.m. Polish time. Two hours later, talks are scheduled to begin with the participation of European leaders in Washington. Significantly, no Polish representatives are among them. The matter is receiving widespread attention, with some calling it a failure of Polish diplomacy.

Nawrocki addressed the matter on Monday during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

“I want to reassure all of you, as well as the public opinion, that last week I took part in two talks with President Trump, but also with European leaders, presenting the clear position of Poland and the Polish state regarding the lack of trust in Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation,” said the president.

The president explained that it was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who invited the European leaders who are to be in Washington today.

“And the President of Poland is the only leader in Europe today, the leader of a state who, on the near horizon, on Sept. 3, has a meeting with President Trump, where security issues, including peace in Ukraine, will be one of the very important points,” said Nawrocki.

“So, thanks to the media that are with us today, I appeal for a certain calm and prudence. We are also in contact with Prime Minister Tusk and the government, because when it comes to matters of Polish security and the international situation, there is no room or time for certain political emotions. Only the interests of the Polish state, which we met (to discuss) today here at the Presidential Palace, are paramount,” he added.

The European delegation that will participate in the talks in Washington includes President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubbs, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Nawrocki, a conservative, is set to make his first state visit to the United States, where he will meet with Trump early next month.

“In an official congratulatory letter delivered on the day of his swearing-in, US President Donald Trump invited Polish President Karol Nawrocki to the White House for an official working meeting on 3 September 2025,” wrote the head of the President’s Cabinet, Pawel Szefernaker, on X.

In the run-up to national elections in Poland, Nawrocki played up his close relationship with Trump.
