This year, the average Christmas spend amounts to PLN 1,289: PLN 525 on presents, PLN 458 on groceries, PLN 69 on cleaning utensils, PLN 65 on a Christmas tree and PLN 172 on other things. In the case of 20 percent of those polled, the cost of gas has to be included, which amounts to PLN 301, which is a PLN 103 increase from 2017.

The main increase in expenses came from food – PLN 58, and presents – PLN 25.

Despite the increase in spending, 57 percent of those polled claim that Christmas is a serious matter which needs to be planned out and budgeted. In 2017, 61 percent of people held the same opinion.

Every sixth Pole claimed that no matter what they do, they would still fall into financial issues due to Christmas spending. Last year, every fifth Pole claimed such a problem. Although the material situation of Poles has improved, many still tread on the thin financial line.

“Positively associated holidays may as a result ruin someone’s credit history and lead to being put into the list of indebted in BIG, due to late credit and bill payments,” claims BIG InfoMonitor Head Sławomir Grzelczak. Only every seventh person can allow themselves not to think about Christmas in terms of spending.
