Six people were detained by Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) on Wednesday for treason, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office, as cited by G4 Media

The six defendants are accused of negotiating with Russian agents Romania’s exit from NATO and traveling to Moscow. The group was organized as a military structure with a staff, prosecutors claim. The six defendants had ties to the Russian Federation’s military attaché in Bucharest and his deputy, who were declared persona non grata by Romania a day earlier.

The six have taken steps to carry out negotiations with external political-military factors regarding Romania’s withdrawal from the military alliance to which it is a party, the removal of the current constitutional order, the dissolution of political parties, the installation of a new government formed by members of the organization who will hold ministerial positions, the removal of all employees from state institutions, the adoption of a new constitution, the change of the country’s name, flag and anthem, the DIICOT press release shows.

Among the suspects is Radu Theodoru, a 101-year-old retired general known for his violently anti-Semitic publications.

His daughter, Voica Theodoru, announced on the general’s Facebook page on Wednesday evening that DIICOT searches had taken place at her father’s home: “Today, March 5, 2025, at 7:45 a.m., three DIICOT employees with a search warrant descended on the residence of my father, Major General (rtr) war veteran Radu Theodoru,” she wrote.

The group was formed under the cover of an organization and developed in the style of a military-type structure, with management echelons (staff) and execution personnel, represented by the image of the suspect investigated in the case, a retired major general, DIICOT explained, referring to General Radu Theodoru.

Theodoru, a founding member of the extremist Greater Romania party in the 1990s, published books (“Romania as Prey”) and articles in which he denies the Holocaust in Romania and promotes anti-Semitic attitudes.
