Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Polish town of Redzikowo was on the Kremlin’s list of nuclear targets due to it hosting a nuclear missile shield installed by the United States.

“The American anti-missile defense base in Poland has joined the list of priority targets for potential nuclear attacks by Russian troops,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“She added that “the opening of the American anti-missile defense base in Poland leads to an increase in the level of nuclear threat, it is a provocative step on the part of Washington.”

As the Kremlin representative pointed out, the opening of the base “is part of the long-term destructive practice of drawing NATO military infrastructure to Russia’s borders.”

“Objectively, this undermines strategic stability and, in combination with other harmful military-political and military-technical measures, aims to project American power thousands of kilometers from the territory of the United States in order to put pressure on Russia and some other nuclear powers. This, of course, leads to an increase in strategic risk and, as a result, to an increase in the overall level of nuclear threat,” the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

She is referring to the military base in Redzikowo near Słupsk (Pomeranian Voivodeship), which was inaugurated last week with the participation of President Andrzej Duda, Minister of National Defense, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski, and representatives of the US Army.

There, part of the US anti-missile shield reached operational readiness in mid-December 2023, almost four years late. This is the most important combat investment of the U.S. in Poland.

The base has a long-range radar station and is armed with interceptor missiles capable of shooting down intercontinental missiles. Its mission is to protect the United States and allied nations.

Russia condemned the base shortly before it launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) against Ukraine earlier today. The missile can be equipped with nuclear weapons, but the one that struck Dnipro had conventional warheads. It marks the first time an ICBM has been launched against another country in any war and marks a dramatic escalation in the conflict.
