Left-wing radicals carried out an Antifa terror attack on the home of Nicola Beer, vice president of the European Investment Bank (EIB), and her husband, Jürgen Illing, the honorary consul of Hungary, for being “too close to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.”
The assault involved spray-painting the house in the Preungesheim district of Frankfurt, as well as an attack on Illing’s BMW SUV. The suspects slashed his car tires, smashed the vehicle’s windshield, and sprayed a fire extinguisher inside.
“In a letter of confession, self-proclaimed anti-fascists accuse the Vice President of the European Investment Bank of being too close to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán,” reports German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ).
The attack, on the night of Nov. 9, involved Antifa activists targeting the family’s residential area near the A661 motorway. While the occupants were asleep, the front of Beer and Illing’s house was “spray-painted… with purple paint.” Beer, an FDP politician, has held the EIB position since Jan. 1, 2024.
The attackers then focused on the BMW SUV owned by Illing, who is 67 and is known for fighting against anti-Semites as a lawyer. The vehicle sustained extensive damage.
The attack was explicitly tied to the arrest of 23-year-old Maja T., who is currently in custody in Hungary for involvement in the infamous “Hammer Gang.” Hungarian authorities indicate Maja T. is a left-wing extremist facing charges of beating individuals, some of whom were mistakenly believed to be far-right members, and delivering extreme and life-changing injuries.
In a statement claiming responsibility, published on the Indymedia website, the Frankfurt attackers issued a demand: “Solidarity with Maja in Hungarian prison – Freedom for all antifascists.”
The statement indicated that the primary target was Jürgen Illing, asserting that he, “together with his wife Nicola Beer, the former FDP general secretary and vice president of the European Investment Bank, represents that unholy and deceitful mixture of capital and fascism that has become unbearable for us.”
The attackers further accused the couple of being “Orbán apologists” and “part of a right-wing elite.”
Illing and Beer declined to comment to Bild to avoid hindering the investigation.
Klemens Hahn, spokesman for the Frankfurt police headquarters, confirmed to Bild: “The State Security Police are investigating in this context on suspicion of property damage.”
The attack follows shortly after Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician Bernd Baumann was attacked in Hamburg by Antifa, including having his vehicle and his wife’s vehicle set on fire, with the fire spreading to three other vehicles from his neighbors.
Baumann posted about the attack on social media, stating: “Dear friends, another Antifa attack on me, 4 cars burned in front of the house. The police woke me up at around 5 a.m., another cowardly terrorist attack, my and my wife’s car completely burned out. This time, Antifa attacked in such a way that the meters-high flames spread to three other cars. They belonged to my neighbors, all total losses, all completely burned out. So many families damaged without a second thought.”
