Hungary is again being written about as one of the three most likely locations for a summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
Now that U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, there is renewed talk that their discussion could be hosted by PM Viktor Orbán in Budapest, says Mandiner, citing a report out of Russian portal Lenta. Putin faces an International Criminal Court arrest warrant, but Hungary has recently withdrawn from the ICC, notably just before receiving Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who is also subject to an ICC arrest warrant.
Other countries in the running to host the talks are Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
It is known that Orbán has close relations with both Putin and Trump, and according to Yuri Usakov, Putin’s foreign policy advisor, the date and location of the meeting have already been agreed upon.
Meanwhile, the situation on the frontline in Ukraine has deteriorated, with concerns surrounding both the drinking water and food for Ukrainian soldiers, given the current heatwave.
Disease is also an issue, specifically in the Kherson region, as RIA Novosti reports that in some units, combat readiness fell below 30 percent due to dysentery or similar illnesses.
One source told the portal that “the questionable living conditions and epidemiological situation could have led to an outbreak of serious diseases.”
