The powerless pro-war elite is trying to prove its own importance, writes Magyar Nemzet in its commentary piece

Europe’s war-mongering leaders are in a panic. Monday’s hastily convened security summit in Paris is a clear example of this. They are still trying to process the fact that the United States did not invite them to talks with Russia on the future of Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he might meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: “I don’t know what the Europeans would be doing at the negotiating table.”

The helpless haste of recent years has now been replaced by hysteria in the West. Europe’s warring leaders are rushing to get a seat at the negotiating table, but the question is whether they can even succeed, but one thing is certain: they will try. They are doing this despite the fact that the continent’s economy is sinking due to Brussels’s misguided sanctions policy, while the Russian-Ukrainian war has cost the lives of masses of people. It seems that Brussels and Western leaders have squandered their opportunities.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also spoke about this in Moscow.

The aim of the Paris talks is for European leaders to try to convince the U.S. president that they are valuable partners. This is evidenced by the fact that European politicians have announced one after another that they are willing to send troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said that the U.K. is “ready and willing to send troops to the field.”

However, Europe’s leaders still fail to realize that they are no longer the ones dictating the war.

After almost three years of non-stop pro-war narratives, they continue to insist that Kyiv participate directly in the ceasefire negotiations. They have long maintained the view that “decisions about Ukraine cannot be made without Ukraine.”

What the warmongers in Paris ignore is the fact that the president of America is no longer Joe Biden, but Donald Trump. And Trump has declared that he will end the suffering and the fighting. Washington has begun negotiations with Moscow.

But much more is at stake for Europe than this.

Not all European countries will attend Monday’s summit, however. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Denmark — which is expected to represent the Baltic and Nordic countries — as well as Brussels and a representative of NATO will be present.

Much of the Paris meeting will reportedly also focus on the issue of sending troops to Ukraine after the ceasefire.

The idea being discussed does not involve peacekeeping troops, but a “security force” that would be stationed behind a potential ceasefire line, rather than on it, the BBC reports.

The purpose of the European team’s presence would be threefold. To send a message to the Ukrainians that they are not alone, another message to the United States to show that Europe is “doing its part” in defending its own continent, and the final message to Moscow to warn it that if it violates the terms of a potential ceasefire, it will have to face more than just Kyiv.

But it’s a controversial concept and will likely not be popular with voters. In Italy, for example, 50 percent of those polled don’t want to send more weapons to Ukraine, let alone their sons, daughters, sisters, and brothers there.

However, there are still many unanswered questions about the idea of pro-war countries. Here are just a few:

How many soldiers should each European country send, for how long, and under whose command? What would their mission be – for example, if Russia violated the terms of an agreed ceasefire, would that mean European soldiers would be directly at war with Russia? Would the United States support them in that case?

Pro-war politicians are panicking over Trump

Donald Trump and his administration have sent an unambiguous message to Europe. The continent should take a much greater responsibility in supporting Kyiv. At the same time, the United States would rather focus on ending the Russia-Ukraine war and reducing its costs.

Washington would turn off the money taps, causing panic among those who want to continue the war with European money.

The bloodshed must end, and this war must end. This is what Donald Trump’s secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, said regarding the Russia-Ukraine war.

“President Trump has made it clear that stopping the fighting and achieving lasting peace is his top priority. He intends to end this war diplomatically and bring both Russia and Ukraine to the table. And the U.S. Department of Defense will help achieve that goal,” he stated.

Hegseth also issued harsh criticism of their allies. He said: “NATO is a great alliance, the most successful defense alliance in history, but for it to survive in the future, our partners must do much more to protect Europe.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also expressed doubts about the role Europe can play in the Ukrainian peace talks. Speaking at a press conference after talks with Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric, he said, “I don’t know what the Europeans would be doing at the negotiating table. If they were to come up with such cunning ideas as freezing the conflict, while they were planning to continue the war in their usual way, according to their morals and customs, then why would we invite them?”

The minister recalled that Europe already had the opportunity to participate in the negotiation process:

“We have fulfilled their wishes several times.”
