During the Oval Office meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the two leaders discussed both an eventual peace, as well as security guarantees for Ukraine.
Many noted the friendly ambiance between the two, who were laughing and joking in front of press, a far cry from the tense meeting held back in February.
They then also held talks with European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
“The conversation with President Trump was very good, perhaps even the best in history. We all want to end this war. We will discuss security guarantees. It is extremely important that the United States sends such a strong signal and is ready to provide security guarantees,” said Ukraine’s head of state at the beginning of the meeting of European leaders, as cited by Poland’s Do Rzeczy.
Zelensky was happy that Trump was seeking trilateral talks and hoped that the American president would be there personally to help finalize any agreement. “If this happens, Ukraine will be very happy,” Zelensky said.
At present, the main priority now is the exchange of prisoners of war and the return of thousands of Ukrainian children kidnapped by the Russians from the occupied territories back in 2022, said Zelensky, who also thanked U.S. First Lady Melania Trump for her letter to Vladimir Putin regarding this matter.
