Renowned and well-liked Polish actors such as Marian Opania, Daniel Olbrychski, Krystyna Janda, Wojciech Pszoniak, Janusz Gajos, Olgierd Łukaszewicz, Krzysztof Kowalewski, Jerzy and Maciej Stuhr have for the past few years been unrelenting in their criticism of Jarosław Kaczyński and Law and Justice party (PiS) voters.
What does this mean? Well, nothing.
Most Poles respect them as actors but do not see them as political authorities. In a strange turn of events, the idols of many Poles are calling them plebeians, boors, and backward idiots.
But maybe Poles are following in the footsteps of more mature Western democracies, such as the United States?
After all, in that country, a countless number of actors have taken up liberal political causes, including Meryl Streep, Leonardo Di Caprio, George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Cooper, Dusting Hoffman, Matt Damon, Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, and many other stars of American cinema.
In 2016, 167 of Hollywood’s greatest opposed Donald Trump and encouraged Americans to vote for Hillary Clinton. And what happened? Trump won in a landslide electoral college victory.
